Here’s a way to travel back in time along the streets of Montrose, all in one day.
Begin your journey in Montrose Museum - one of the oldest purpose-built museums in Scotland, it is an elegant building constructed from pink sandstone which overlooks the historic Mid Links parks. Weather permitting, walk along the lovely mid-links park, one of the loveliest part of the town.
During the summer months, you can continue on to visit William Lamb Studio (other times by arrangement with the curator of Montrose Museum). The studio features the artist' sculpture, prints and drawings. Should be about lunch time by now.
After lunch, along the south side of the High Street visit Montrose Library, designed in the Free Renaissance and Scots Baronial styles often described as a "union of the picturesque and graceful with dignity and solidity". Continue on to the main High Street area, you will notice the many sculptures that adorn the town and the many "closes" that Montrose is famous for. To learn more about each sculptures, you can follow the Sculpture Trail or hop on your car / public bus heading North to visit Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre. Britain’s first operational military airfield set up in 1913. The heritage centre has collection of photographs and artefacts from RFC/RAF Montrose. Lastly visit House of Dun, a beautiful Georgian House, only 3 miles west of Montrose, built in the early 18th century for David Erskine, Lord Dun, it was modelled closely on the Château d'Issy near Paris. Head back to town and enjoy the Night Life in Montrose.
Begin with a sumptuous breakfast from your Hotel or B&B or have coffee in the High Street, then take a gentle stroll down to Montrose Basin, Scurdie Ness Light House, Montrose Museum, William Lamb, Montrose Beach, RAF Montrose, House of Dun.
House of Dun, Dunninald, Brechin Castle, Edzell Castle - Glamis Castle
Scurdie Ness Lighthouse, Elephant Rock, Boddin Point, Lunan Bay, St Cyrus, Montrose Beach
Why not try the local Coffee House at the corner of the High Street near the Town House? It's frequented by friendly locals, with a charming ambiance and good food. If you are after a full lunch menu, visit the nearby B-Lo Cafe and Restaurant in Market Street. To access the cafe you come along a short narrow close which opens on to a tranquil and secluded court yard. The Cafe is famous for its freshly prepared modern scottish cooking. Two of my lunchtime favourites are George Hotel in George Street with its delicious lunch menu and Carlton Hotel at the High Street thats offers the popular “lunchtime specials” where all main meals are priced at £4.95, then add a sweet for £1.00!
